"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale." -Susan Stewart
I chose this image to demonstrate how tiny we are in retrospect to the rest of the world. We never think about ourselves in comparison like that.
"...the nostalgic input of the handmade in a plastic world." -Susan Stewart
This photo depicts something that was actually handmade healing/cleansing my natural body. We may live in a plastic world, but our bodies are one thing that should remain natural and "handmade."
"Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience." -Susan Stewart
My generation is big on taking photos of what they are doing and posting it for all their followers to see, a big one is photographing food. This photo is of a done up food item, so picture perfect how could I resit taking it, but this photo doesn't equal the authentic experience I had eating it. Honestly I was probably alone and devoured the bowl after taking the photo while sitting on my phone looking at other peoples "authentic experiences."
"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy" -Susan Stewart
Where do you think I am in this photo? Bali? Indonesia? China? Japan? No, I was in St Augustine. This little hookah bar completely enveloped a multi-cultural and exotic vibe. Humans cherish getting to experience other cultures and we like to keep souvenirs to do so. However, since I have not traveled to any of the places stated above, this was sort of the closest i could get for now.
"The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental and the three dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body." -Susan Stewart
In this photo I am sipping a nice tropical drink out of a pineapple on the beach in Miami. I chose this photo because it is all I have left of that trip to Miami. All the things I experienced there are finding homes in my long-term memory.
